Fields Gained and Shot Involvement By Team...part two
Player by Player Look at Offensive Contribution in the Premier League
It’s easy to check the xG + xA of each player, go sort the table on football-reference. This tells you a ton and is a massive jump from the good old days when the big guys who could scrape would hoard this info like a Corona self-test in the 2022 American South. Anyway this is a look at The Other Stuff
Fields Gained Per 90: carrying and passing yardage per 90, if you progress the ball 10 yards from 100 yards away that’s 0.1 Fields Gained (10% of the field)…if you progress the ball 3 yards from 30 yards away, that’s also 0.1 Fields Gained.
Receiving Gained Per 90: the same idea just receiving yardage.
Shot Buildup Involvements: a pass, dribble or offensive move in the 20 seconds leading up to a shot
Man Utd
Standout Positives: Bruno has lost some G/A, but has still had an amazing season offensviely. McTominay has produced more than some of the hate suggests.
Standout Negatives: Rashford and Cavani have not been shot creators or progressors.
Newcastle
Standout Positives: ASM and Joelinton deliver both as receiving outlets and shot creators on a team with lots of players who are contributing nothing with the ball.
Norwich
Standout Positives: Pierre Lees-Melou is above average in all 3 categories we are tracking here. He’s a clear at least mid-table PL quality player.
Southampton
Standout Positives: Walker-Peters is an amazing progressor…Nathan Redmond feels like he’s over the hill for some reason (maybe the hair) but the guy has been great for a team lacking progression.
Standout Negatives: Perraud is in the Cork category where I feel bad for dumping on them over and over.
Tottenham
Standout Positives: Moura seemed like he might have been on his way out a while ago, he’s emerged as a clear #3 option in the attack. Reguilon has put up quality numbers.
Standout Negatives: Dele Alli has been one of the worst players in the league essentially every week he’s played, Tanganga continues to look in over his head.
Watford
West Ham
Wolves
Standout Positives: Ruben Neves used to get a lot of hype when he was linked to Man United, he’s still one of the best midfielders in the league. It’s sort of odd Traore loses his starting role so often.
Standout Negatives: Moutinho needs to be replaced, he’s getting old. Why Wolves spent 16 million on Hwang Hee-Chan? He scored a few goals when he first started playing. He’s arguably been the worst attacker in the league overall.
