Key Pass Combos: Green: Asamoah-Perisic, Red: D'Ambrosio-Politano
Quick Summary
A wing-oriented attack is probably a Champions League-level attack, the quality of shot they are getting is excellent, but the defense is a bit leaky. You can get shots against Inter and the center of their defense is quite weak when you break through. They are right on the knife edge ofChampions League quality, having one of the best strikers in the world in Mauro Icardi really helps.
Player Reports
Matteo Politano, 25, right-winger
The top two pass combos leading up to a shot for Inter both involve Politano but there’s a bit of a feeling that we aren’t seeing the best out of him. In transition and early in possession Politano is great but for a team like Inter who has long possessions, a player like Politano who fades out might not be the best fit. Maybe he can improve a bit later in possessions and get into more shooting positions, right now he’s a good volume deep completions provider, but is inefficient there and almost everywhere he passes. Most players see a higher % of passes come closer to a shot the later a possession gets, teams are closer to goal, have moved the ball forward for the most part. But Politano sees his % fall off the cliff from 13% of passes within 10 seconds of a shot when he’s involved early in a possession vs just 4% late in possessions.
Mauro Icardi, 25, forward
The last 5 years for Icardi he’s averaged 0.60 xG/90. That’s more than Mo Salah and just short of Harry Kane. The consistency with which he simply produces monster shot production and nothing else is impressive: he has1 tackle and 2 interceptions this year, he barely carries the ball at all, he makes 15 passes a game, rarely completes passes in deep areas and has 3 dribbles on the season. Mauro Icardi is a pure shooting and scoring machine.
