The Bundesliga Chart
Look at the last post for a full explanation of what is going on here. I'll just add the colors: more orange the better field position advantage your team has, for example Leipzig are starting their possessions 10 yards closer to goal compared to their opponents. The size of the circle is how much of an edge you have proportionally in taking good shots, so Hoffenheim's opponents take a lot more "good" shots as a % of total than they do.
Takeaways
-Bayern is simply in another league passing the ball.
-Leipzig kind of stands out as a team doing everything on this chart well. What are they missing? They have biggest field position edge, are outpassing opponents by a solid margin, have a much better "good" shot rate, and are much quicker to get shots off in possession. They've got a strong base and nothing looks really wrong here, I'd like to hear what you think could be a huge flaw that this chart is missing?
-Hoffenheim lead the league in highest share of passes that lead to shot within 15 seconds (12.4%) and lowest share of opposition passes that do the same (2.9%). They are on opposite sides of the close shot proportion.
-Dortmund, as per usual with Favre, are using huge amounts of passes per shot in his typical deliberate pace. He usually doesn't show up in any sort of shot quality model, but actually creates separation on the pitch in shot quality.
-Freiburg is taking the Watford/Cardiff role of just launching shots quickly and not really doing anything else well.
-Nuernberg are interesting, they have one of worst goal differentials in the league but show up similar to early season surprise Werder Bremen here. Of course the one big problem is the difference in shot quality, Nuernberg can't take any good shots (32% inside 15 yards is lowest in the league while Bremen are up at 49%). Fundamentals look great but if you can't take good shots...
-Very odd for Schalke to have such good field position and be in the bottom left quadrant. No English team had a field position edge and was comfortably in bottom left quadrant, same here. It's a total mess there.
Broken down into offense and defense
Leipzig's offense is pretty terrifying while Bayern's is honestly not as machine-like as I expected to see on this chart. Frankfurt...that's not good.
Bayern are so hard to move the ball against and to get close shots off against (size of dot), Bremen's only real weakness shows up in that they are conceding shots pretty quickly in possession.
