Thanks and Same here haha. And there’s no good stat resource really so might be most value add thing I do (for my understanding). Tiny sample and tons of factors go into a WC but it’s nice to at least directionally know what to expect.
In your analyses for WC/Euro tournaments, do you ever find tendencies around styles of play? To my eye, it seems like "simpler" structures among the elite teams seem to perform better than those that do anything on th emore comprehensive end. Also thinking about how John Muller's groupings here would frame this https://futiapp.substack.com/p/how-many-ways-are-there-to-play-football
Nothing really stats wise to back it up, but I agree with you. I haven’t looked at lots of the specifics like wing play vs centrality or regain behavior or high press rate, etc at international level just bc data is only there at a WC or Euro and then sample is tiny vs mismatched opponents, etc. but like a France 18 or old Spain or often Brazil where you control game but don’t rush too far forward and don’t press a lot does seem to be the „best“ way. Giving up cheap goals just seems magnified here as it’s harder to be fluid to score without as much recent experience and harder to build complicated press/box crashing structures. Germany for example have been amazing in terms of dominance last 2 WCs but probably raised risk of going out due to silly goals with how aggressive they were?
Yeah, the OOP phases seem to be the major difference between club and international football right now. Fully agreed on your takes about aggression being penalized. In general, seems like “tactics” are generally flattened, whereas randomness and individual quality are bigger factors?
I very loosely track qualifiers and friendlies, so this series you're doing is thorougly appreciated. Always glad to see your writings pop up
